Bubble Tour

This tour is conducted in the safety of your ‘bubble’ of family or friends and is perfect for small groups. Designed for the purpose of extra safety at Covid-19 Alert Level 2 and post Covid-19, it looks to minimalize contact with those people outside of your bubble.

The tour includes a 45 minute exploration of Pūkaha’s forest and wildlife attractions with one of our dedicated rangers. You will learn the untold stories behind our birds and plants with someone who knows the forest best.

Campervan overnight stays with tours

Overnight in Pūkaha’s Reserve from the comfort of your campervan and choose a tour to suit your travel plans. There are two tours to choose from.

Campervan overnight stay with dawn tour.

Wake up with the birds and rise early to depart on the two-hour loop track. Guided by expert rangers, enjoy a walk in nature connecting with wildlife and taking in early morning vistas. Afterwards revive at the Kākā Café with a hearty cooked breakfast. Your Dawn Tour can occur the morning of your campervan arrival or the morning after arrival.

Campervan overnight stay with night tour

Experience the magic and wonder of the ngahere (forest) at night. Your eyes and ears will become accustomed to the night-time activity of nature in the Reserve. Enjoy a unique opportunity to explore Aotearoa’s flora and fauna with a knowledgable guide and learn stories of Pukaha’s taonga. Your Night Tour will occur the evening of your campervan arrival.

Family Tour

Designed especially for children, the 45 minute Family Tour encourages kids of all ages to get excited about conservation!

Discover some fascinating native birds, bugs and eels. Learn Maori legends.

Junior Rangers

Created for young nature lovers aged 5-14yrs, Junior Rangers offers hands-on learning in Pūkaha’s Reserve and is available during the NZ School Holidays.

Come and explore the world of manu (birds), reptiles, fungi and insects, see our iconic tuna (longfin eels), learn about trapping and plenty more!

Each session is tailored to the weather conditions and offers flexibility to suit children’s interests in the Reserve. Our knowledgeable guides provide stories and fun facts about the forest and its wildlife – there’s lots to learn and enjoy.

Includes lunch (vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options available).

Parents/caregivers receive a free coffee/hot drink when they drop off their tamariki!

Night Tour

If you want to experience the real Aotearoa New Zealand, then a step into the darkness is a must.

Join our skilled rangers on this 2-hour night tour, as they take you on an unforgettable search for kiwi, wētā, and eels, and view our very own glow worm cave. What you see during the tour varies depending on the weather, the abundance of forest food, whether it’s summer or winter, and more.

Includes entry the day of your tour or the day following your tour.

Minimum age 10 years.

Ranger for a Day Experience

Join our Rangers for a day on the ultimate, exclusive, conservation experience.

Start the day at 8:00am, before the park opens to the public.

You will shadow various Rangers behind the scenes whilst they perform their daily duties.

Actual activities may vary depending on the needs of the wildlife, but may include: weighing kiwi, health checks, feeding bush birds, cleaning inside aviaries and more.

Talk to the team during morning/afternoon tea and lunch whilst eating tasty food provided by Kākā Café. This is an amazing opportunity to ask species specialists all the questions you’ve ever wondered.

Finish your experience at the 3:00pm Kākā talk.

Te Hīkoi o Pūkaha

Join local iwi Rangitāne on a 1.5 hour walk through the bush. Learn about wildlife, trees and traditional stories of the Tangata Whenua (people of the land). Listen to ancient stories of the Pūkaha forest. Discover Māori whakapapa (genealogy), spirituality and connection to place.

Includes shared kai (food) of kawakawa tea and bread. Includes entry.

Wildlife Photography Workshop

Learn from Pūkaha’s respected professional photographers about your camera and how to photograph wildlife on this 6-hour practical workshop (includes a break for lunch).

Suitable for any photography level and equipment including smart phones, compact cameras, DSLR; from the enthusiast through to the professional. Bring your own phone/camera to use. Includes photographic theory tutorial and practical outdoor photo experience.

Opportunity to photograph our aviary birds from the outside (how to get good photos through mesh or glass); inside free flight aviary; wild birds on the loop track; plants, trees, tuatara, geckos, skinks and more.

An early 8:00am start allows for the best light and wildlife activity opportunities.

Buy lunch at Kākā Café or BYO lunch.
