Tours and Talks
We hold the following daily talks, free with every entrance ticket:
- 11:00 am Reptiles and Forgotten Fauna
- 12:00 pm Kiwi
- 1:30 pm Longfin Eel
- 3:00 pm Kākā
We also offer three tours, two school holiday programmes and visits for schools, community organisations and other groups:
Our aviary track through the forest is accessible for those in wheelchairs or using strollers.
We have a mobility scooter, stroller and umbrellas for our customers use available at the counter on a first come first served basis.

Behind the Scenes Tour
An in-depth 2.5 hour look at conservation in action, the Behind the Scenes tour puts you in the shoes of our rangers so that you can see the inner workings of the National Wildlife Centre.

A 1-hour exploration of Pūkaha’s forest with one of our dedicated rangers. You will learn the untold stories behind our birds and plants with someone who knows the forest best.

If you want to experience the real New Zealand, then a step into the darkness is a must.
Join our skilled rangers as they take you on an unforgettable search for kiwi, wētā, and eels, and view our very own glow worm cave. Only for the intrepid at heart!

5-10 year olds wanting to engage with nature and learn about Pūkaha’s living ecosystem will want to sign up for our holiday Junior Ranger programme.
Spend the day exploring the forest, meeting the birds and help prepare lunch for the kākā – plus feed our resident longfin eels!
Hours: 11am – 3pm
Includes: Lunch (vegetarian/vegan/gluten free options available)
Runs every Wednesday during school holidays
Te Kakano Teen Rangers
11-14 year olds can get their hands dirty and their minds awakened with our Te Kakano programme designed to beat holiday boredom! Feed the eels, learn about the forest’s living ecosystem and meet like-minded friends at Pukaha.

School or Group Visits
Whether it’s a classroom visit, scouts, girl guides, cubs, rangers, St Johns, home-school groups — really, any organisation with an interest in native wildlife and our environment! — we offer fun, educational programs for schools including overnight sleepovers and night tours.
