Te Hīkoi o Pūkaha

Join Rangitāne on a walk through the bush. Learn about wildlife, trees and traditional stories of the Tangata Whenua (people of the land). Listen to ancient stories of the Pūkaha forest. Discover Māori whakapapa (genealogy), spirituality and connection to place. Includes shared kai (food) of kawakawa tea and bread.

Tour is 2 hours and includes entry.

Night Tour

If you want to experience the real New Zealand, then a step into the darkness is a must.

Join our skilled rangers as they take you on an unforgettable search for kiwi, wētā, and eels, and view our very own glow worm cave. Only for the intrepid at heart! 

Includes entry the day of or the day following your tour.

Wildlife Photography Workshop

Learn from Pūkaha’s respected professional photographers about your camera and how to photograph wildlife on this 6 hour practical workshop (includes a break for lunch).

Suitable for any photography level and equipment including smart phones, compact cameras, DSLR; from the enthusiast through to the professional. Bring your own phone/camera to use. Includes photographic theory tutorial and practical outdoor photo experience.

Opportunity to photograph our aviary birds from the outside (how to get good photos through mesh or glass); inside free flight aviary; wild birds on the loop track; plants, trees, tuatara, geckos, skinks and more.

An early 8:00am start allows for the best light and wildlife activity opportunities.

Buy lunch at Kākā Café or BYO lunch.

Ranger for a Day Experience

Join our Rangers for a day on the ultimate, exclusive, conservation experience.

Start the day at 8:00am, before the park opens to the public.

You will shadow various Rangers behind the scenes whilst they perform their daily duties.

Actual activities may vary depending on the needs of the wildlife, but may include: weighing kiwi, health checks, feeding bush birds, cleaning inside aviaries and more.

Talk to the team during morning/afternoon tea and lunch whilst eating tasty food provided by Kākā Café. This is an amazing opportunity to ask species specialists all the questions you’ve ever wondered.

Finish your experience at the 3:00pm Kaka talk.

Junior Rangers

Created for young nature lovers aged 5-14yrs, Junior Rangers offers hands-on learning in Pūkaha’s Reserve and is available during the NZ School Holidays.

Spend the day exploring the forest, meeting and feeding the birds (especially our cheeky kaka) – plus feed our resident Longfin Eels!

Each session is tailored to the weather conditions and offers flexibility to suit childrens’ interests in the Reserve. Our knowledgeable guides provide stories and fun facts about the forest and its wildlife – there’s lots to learn and enjoy.

Includes lunch (vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options available).

Runs 11:00am – 3:00pm Monday – Friday during school holidays.
