The Talking Tūī – Prince Tūī Teka

Meet Prince Tūī Teka, our talking tūī, who resides in the Francis Free Flight Aviary. Rescued and rehabilitated after an injury, Prince Tūī had one of his voice boxes removed during recovery. Due to the extended time spent around people, he learned to mimic human speech and now has a few phrases in his repertoire.

Prince Tūī was brought to Pūkaha to enjoy the good life and now spends his days flying freely with the Korimako (bellbirds) and singing along with them. His name was chosen through a Facebook naming competition, inspired by the late entertainer Prince Tui Teka.

He often perches in the trees by the entrance of the aviary, ready to greet visitors as they come in. Be sure to say hello when you see him!
